Fundamentals: Grayscale

This is an drawing warm-up exercise. We often use it to explore a material, such as a new pencil, watercolor, or marker. In this video, we'll show you how to create grayscale with a standard, everyday pencil. You can use this technique again and again to explore the materials you like to work with!

What you need:

  • A standard pencil, or any kind of drawing tool you want to try out.
  • Paper
  • A ruler
  • Eraser

Biography

Bailey Chick is an interdisciplinary artist whose work is rooted in drawing, printmaking, and installation. She served as founding director for Metropolitan Gallery 250, a curator with multiple credits, and has exhibited internationally. Chick received her MFA from the University of Delaware, where she also served as adjunct faculty.
